With over 50% of all air travel booked online and 90% of all out-of-state travel researched online, the Internet is the perfect place for a travel magazine. "It also eliminates the distribution problem," says Paul Pence, the managing editor of Rhode Island Roads magazine. "We have subscribers from Portugal to Korea -- some are displaced Rhode Islanders and some are just interested in learning more about Rhode Island."
After just 18 months, the combination of increased circulation, strong marketing, and affiliate partnerships with Internet giants like Google, Ebay, and Amazon have resulted in a positive cash flow.
"Our investors were prepared for a three year journey toward profitablity," Pence said. "We cut that in half."
Careful cost control was critical to this success. "We did our programming and website development in house, as well as the majority of content development. Now that we're getting a positive cash flow, we'll be able to pay freelancers for articles."
With this goal met, the plan for expansion will be accellerated. "The investors want to leverage Rhode Island Roads into a series of related and inter-connected websites. The next step of the plan is to launch an online magazine dedicated to worldwide travel." That website, jaunting.com, will be launched later this year.
"The staff is excited about reaching this goal, and we look forward to even more exciting growth in the future."
